One of the most annoying things that our dog does to us is to nip at our heels when we pass by them. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t happen. The one thing for sure is that when our dog nips at us, we normally go nuts, kick at them, scream, or just get generally agitated.
The one thing that we never remember is that all these things we do when our dog makes us mad by nipping at us never work. All they normally do is to get our dog more crazy and they then turn from nipping into jumping and barking. We need to understand that whatever we are doing is not working.
Our dogs focus on our body language and when we pass by them, we naturally switch from a strong state into a weak or even playful state. This sends a signal to our dog that they now have the opportunity to take charge and get their way. This normally displays itself as the initial nipping of our pants when we pass by.
Robin and I have a great article that goes into more detail about what our dogs are thinking because of our inappropriate and uneducated actions. We will educate you as to what you should be doing to make this annoying occurrence go away for good. Please take a look at our dog training article titled “How Can I Stop My Dog Nipping at My Heels”.
