When you get right down to it, the world can be a pretty scary place.  Even Disneyland, the “Happiest Place on Earth” can be pretty scary.  Do you really feel safe with a flying elephant spinning around over your head?  This could be the beginning of a story with a really, really bad ending.

With that said, the truth of the matter is that we all seem to survive and have happy, safe, and rewarding lives.  So, how could this be?  The world is scary, but we are fine with it.  We need to understand that it didn’t start out that way.

Just about everyone of us came into this world crying.  We had no idea what was going on and, what ever it was, we weren’t too happy about it.  The world was scary.

But the world is not scary now.  What happened?

What happened was “socialization”.  We needed to be taught that stuff was really OK and all those things out there were not going to hurt us.  We couldn’t just be told this, we had to experience this.  That is where our parents came into the picture.

Our mother would take us to the market and we would ride up and down the isles in the cart seat.  After a while, the experience turned from scary to fun. Our dad would take us on car rides and we would go for walks in the park or around the neighborhood. What was once unknown became familiar.

We need to do the same thing with our new puppies.  Robin and I have a great article that will explain this and get you off on the right foot. Please check out our dog training blog titled “How Do I Get My Puppy Happy with All the Stuff Around Him”.  P.S. Those Flying Elephants in Fantasy Land still freak me out!
